Compost

Compost can be used to enrich flower and vegetable gardens, to improve soil around trees and shrubs and as a lawn top-dressing. We recommend applying a layer of compost around plants, trees and shrubs before installing a woody mulch to help prevent the nitrogen tie-up that is possible when using bark mulches.

ORMI's compost is produced on-site from the yard debris which is brought to our facility. Leaves, grass and tree trimmings are processed through a tub grinder, and later placed through a screen in order to obtain a beautiful end product. Our compost has been used throughout the area in commercial, institutional, educational and residential projects. Some of our customers include Forest Park, the St. Louis Zoo, Washington University, the Missouri Botanical Garden and the Jewel Box.

When ORMI compost is added to the soil it improves soil structure, texture, aeration and water retention. It adds organic matter, which improves the way water interacts with the soil, and improves the nutrients in the soil.

Mulch

Mulch is an aesthetic ground cover and can be used in your garden or planting beds to retain moisture, control weeds, prevent soil erosion and to act as soil insulation. Mulch should be initially applied in a depth of 3 inches, and subsequent top dressing should be applied in a 1 inch depth. When mulching around trees, do not mound the mulch up around the tree trunk as this can cause too much moisture to be retained, causing root rot. Piling mulch against the trunk can also lead to pests and diseases. Instead, keep the mulch pulled back from the trunk several inches.

A wide variety of mulches are available from ORMI at the Fort Bellefontaine Compost Center.

Native Regrind Mulch

ORMI's Native Regrind Mulch is a dark-brown, environmentally friendly product, made from the recycled woody materials brought to us by landscapers and tree trimmers. It is produced on-site and contains all parts of many woody plants, not just the bark, resulting in a diverse mulch that is native to the St. Louis Metropolitan region. Native Regrind provides superb weed control, moisture retention, long-term soil enrichment, and an attractive appearance. Unlike hardwood mulches Native Regrind maintains a softer surface area, tending not to give the garden or bed an egg carton look and feel. This mulch gradually decomposes and works itself into the soil. Native Regrind Mulch is available in either a Double Ground or a Triple Ground format.

Native Regrind Mulch has been used throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area with great success. It has been installed at residences, universities, retail stores, parks, commercial and institutional landscape projects and even at the Arch!

Blond Cedar Mulch

Blond Cedar Mulch provides a unique mulching alternative for your landscaping projects. Cedar mulch is a long-lasting choice for weed control, while maintaining an attractive appearance. We recommend a layer of 2-4 inches of mulch over a thin layer of ORMI compost to help prevent the nitrogen tie-up which can occur as the hardwood mulch gradually decomposes.

Red Dyed Mulch

This mulch is made from white oak set aside in barrel manufacturing, which is then dyed with an environmentally friendly colorant for a long lasting color. No trees are harvested to make this mulch.

Double Ground Oak Mulch

The Oak Hardwood Mulch consists of double-ground red oak bark, finely shredded to make an attractive, dark-colored mulch. Use a 2-3 inch layer of mulch over a thin layer of ORMI compost to suppress weeds and help retain moisture.

Certified Playground Chips

The playground chips sold by ORMI are environmentally safe, meet flammability standards, and have met the standards of ADA, ASTM, CPSC and CSA. The chips are manufactured from natural wood fibers and contain no chemicals or artificial ingredients. Designed to reduce injuries on playgrounds, these chips also provide a stable, resilient surface for trails.

Leaf Mulch

Leaf Mulch is made up of decomposed leaves which have been screened to remove the large particles. The dark color of Leaf Mulch makes a very distinctive mulch which is 100% natural. Unlike other mulches, leaf mulch smells like a forest floor following a rain. It provides excellent moisture retention with a rich, organic material that will also enrich your soil. An application of 2-3 inches of Leaf Mulch will provide a beautiful appearance while suppressing weed growth.

Soils

A healthy, flourishing garden begins with healthy soil. Poor soil is a common cause for failure to grow vigorous, attractive lawns and gardens. Adding organic matter is the surest way to improve heavy, clay soils. The blended product results in improved drainage, while at the same time desirable water holding characteristics are retained. Additionally, nutrients are held in place and released gradually to plant roots. ORMI offers a variety of soil products to meet the needs of its customers.

Garden Soil

Garden Soil is a 50/50 mix of compost and screened clay, with a small amount of sand added. This soil is best used in flower and vegetable gardens.

Enriched Soil

ORMI's Enriched Soil is great for lawn applications. It consists of approximately a 70/30 mix of screened clay and compost, with 1% sand added.

Screened Clay Soil

This product is made from loamy clay harvested from a nearby quarry, which is then run through a trommel screen to remove rocks, roots and other debris. This soil can be used as an alternative to Enriched Soil when compost isn't necessarily needed.

Fill Dirt

This screened clay material is best suited for backfilling around foundations, and filling deep holes.
